A long and winding and sometimes perilous road led Cynthia
to LMUMC…well, that and her buddy and musical right-hand guy, Lloyd, paved the
way. As far back as she can remember, Cynthia always knew she wanted to be a
singer. Her musical journey has been rich with a variety of singing styles and
opportunities. Cynthia was brought up singing with the choir and singing solos
at Holy Family Catholic Church in Artesia. Cynthia graduated with a Bachelor of
Music in Voice Performance from CSULB and then returned years later to obtain a
Master’s in Linguistics with a Teaching English as a Second Language (TESL) certificate.
Currently, Cynthia is an online adjunct professor of English as a Second
Language and Music Theory 1 for beginning ukulele to adult students.
In between undergraduate and graduate school, Cynthia spread
her wings at vocal competitions, the Long Beach Opera, Opera Pacific, the Los Angeles
Chamber Singers, and Zephyr Voice Ensemble. Later she branched out and sang in
a progressive rock band for a short confusing time. Always up for a musical
challenge, Cynthia dabbled in composing music and acting with Shakespearean
theater troupes in Orange County and Long Beach. At the age of 19, with only
one semester of choral and instrumental conducting under her belt, Cynthia was unexpectedly
appointed to be Director of Music at Belmont Heights UMC. There she discovered
the satisfying and marvelous craft of conducting for the next 31 years. Cynthia
is now delighted and overjoyed to be part of this talented and soulful music
team, as well as becoming a member of LMUMC.
