Film & Faith: 1946 Documentary re-Screening and Discussion

This August, the Mission Collaborative invites you to La Mirada Methodist Church for a special screening of 1946: The Mistranslation That Shifted Culture—a powerful documentary by Rocky Roggio exploring how the 1946 Revised Standard Version of the Bible first introduced the word “homosexual” into English scripture. Many scholars and faith leaders now argue that this mistranslation has fueled decades of misunderstanding, harm, and exclusion toward LGBTQ+ individuals in Christian communities.

Whether you’re seeing it for the first time or joining us for a second viewing, this is a chance to watch together, share a potluck meal (as any good Methodist gathering would), and engage in thoughtful, grace-filled conversation afterward. We’ll reflect on how translation choices have shaped theology and identity, and how faith communities can respond with compassion, integrity, and a deeper commitment to inclusion.

All are welcome—come with your questions, your curiosity, and your appetite for both food and meaningful dialogue.

Details to follow.

Homeless advocacy workshop

Learning to Stand with Families in Crisis

Whittier First United Methodist Church will host a Homeless Advocacy Workshop in collaboration with Family Promise, the national faith-based organization dedicated to preventing and ending family homelessness through local, community-led action. Family Promise empowers families facing housing crises through rotating host congregations, emergency shelter, stabilization, mentorship, and advocacy services—all grounded in compassion and dignity.

This four‑hour workshop is designed to equip local advocates, volunteers, and church members with practical tools and knowledge to support families experiencing homelessness—helping deepen awareness of root causes, learn pathway programs like prevention and stabilization, and discover how scheduled rotations and local affiliated services build impact.

By joining together in this training, we hope to strengthen our role as a caring community partner—one that not only welcomes those in need, but also equips people to act with informed compassion and sustained faith-led advocacy. Full schedule and registration details coming soon.
